How can we use the smart grid to address climate change? Utilities across the country are deploying smart grids, driven by the need to modernize infrastructure, improve efficiency, and empower customers. If implemented wisely, smart grids also could reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by five percent to nine percent from 2005 levels, to deliver nearly one-quarter of the proposed Waxman-Markey GHG reduction targets for 2030.

The discussion topics included challenges and opportunities of upgrading and automating US's ageing electrical grids over the next several years.

Για πρώτη φορά στα τελευταία είκοσι χρόνια ο Ελληνας καταναλωτής αναζητεί επίμονα λύσεις με τις οποίες θα περιορίσει τις πάγιες δαπάνες του νοικoκυριού του. Ακόμη και αν αυτές τον ωθούν σε αγορά ακριβότερων προϊόντων, τα οποία όμως υπόσχονται εξοικονόμηση άλλων δαπανών όπως για παράδειγμα το κόστος του λογαριασμού της ΔΕΗ.

Smart Meters Hold Great Promise for Energy and Cost Savings, but Utilities Need to Improve Customer Education to Reap the Rewards, Says The Boston Consulting Group. Smart meters hold much promise for U.S. utilities and their customers, but utilities need to do a better job of educating consumers on their use to reap the benefits, according to a survey of nearly 1,700 U.S. consumers conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) recently.

Smart Grid Dynamic Pricing: Behavior Change Easier Said than Done
As I wrote recently, technologically, the current U.S. grid system has not changed much over the last few decades. The old systems provide little understanding of the actual usage until the meter is read on a monthly basis, allowing little maneuverability to utilities during high electric usage. As electricity usage increases over time, particularly with increased popularity of electrical vehicles, utilities need to be able to properly manage peak time usage in order to avoid overtaxing their systems, or worse, blackouts.

WASHINGTON - The United States is badly lagging in basic research on new forms of energy, deepening the nation’s dependence on dirty fuels and crippling its international competitiveness, a diverse group of business executives warn in a study to be released Thursday. The group, which includes Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft; Jeffrey R. Immelt, chief executive of General Electric; and John Doerr, a top venture capitalist, urges the government to more than triple spending on energy research and development, to $16 billion a year.

Η διανομή ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας περνά από την εποχή του broadcasting σε νέα μοντέλα που επιτρέπουν αλληλεπίδραση ανάμεσα σε προμηθευτή και πελάτη. Η Ενωση Εταιρειών Λιανικής Πώλησης Ενέργειας της Βρετανίας, η οποία εκπροσωπεί τους μεγαλύτερους παρόχους ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας και φυσικού αερίου, υποδέχτηκε με μεγάλη χαρά την απόφαση του Department for Energy and Climate Change για την τοποθέτηση έξυπνων μετρητών σε κάθε σπίτι μέχρι το τέλος του 2020.

Towards a new Energy Strategy for Europe 2011-2020
European energy policy has developed in the last decade with the European Commission adopting successive Green Papers and Strategic Energy Reviews to advance the agenda on sustainability, competitiveness and security of supply. The first EU Energy Action Plan1, endorsed by the European Council in March 2007, has been largely executed through new legislation and ongoing proposals that will soon be agreed. In 2007 the European Council called on the Commission to prepare a new Action Plan for the post 2010 period.
